Natural Choice woven coffins from Passages

The Passages Collection of eco-friendly coffins are hand crafted by skilled weavers. They are suitable for natural burial and clean cremation. Each coffin features convenient handles for carrying, along with a natural cotton interior lining, pillow and shroud. The coffins are simple to close.

Since the coffins are handmade, they may vary slightly in color and appearance. Each coffin has a flat underside to provide added strength and simplify transfer into the cremation retort.

Each coffin is weight tested to 300 lbs.

 WILLOW - 5'9" and 6'5" (small and large)

Each WILLOW coffin features natural flax rope handles for carrying, along with a natural cotton interior lining with leak resistant base and pillow. The coffins have secure and simple to use lid closures. Each casket has a flat strawboard underside to provide added strength and simplify transfer into the cremation retort.

Willow plants are fast growing, easy to harvest and require no fertilizers. The willows replenish fertility in depleted soils in addition to providing habitat for birds and insects. They also act as windbreaks, stabilize soil and combat both river and coastal erosion.

BAMBOO 5'9", 6'1" and 6'5"  (small, medium and large)

The bamboo plants that this coffin is made from are fast growing, easy to harvest and require no fertilizers. They also replenish fertility in depleted soils, in addition to providing habitats for birds and insects. The bamboo used to produce our caskets is grown and harvested by the villagers that actually make the caskets. This bamboo is not a source of food for threatened panda populations.

SEAGRASS - 5'9" and 6'5" (small and large)

The seagrass used to create the Passages Collection, Seagrass Casket is a cultivated hybrid of the seagrass plant that grows in the ocean. It is not genetically modified, but rather has evolved over centuries. This seagrass is not grown in the ocean, but rather in fields like rice paddy's that are seasonally flooded with sea water. In some parts of the world, naturally occurring marine seagrass is being over harvested and threatening delicate marine ecosystems.

HANDMADE PAPER SCULPTURE - 100% RECYCLED PAPER COFFIN

A virtual sculpture that brings together artisan skills with style, elegance and a respect for the environment, the Ecopod is painstakingly handmade from naturally hardened, 100% recycled paper - mainly newsprint and office paper - and carefully formed into its Egyptian-inspired design It's covered in a handmade paper constructed of 100% naturally dyed mulberry bark paper.  Ecopods are made by hand at the ARKA workshop in Brighton by father and son team - Peter and Gar Rock.  Peter is also a co-owner of ARKA Ecopod Ltd with designer Hazel Selene.

These sturdy furniture-grade coffins are made from fast-growing cane interwoven with sustainably harvested seagrass. Cane is a rainforest by-product that regrows readily, providing an income for communities that encourages their foresters to maintain the trees rather than cut them down.

The "English" - 100% English Willow Coffin

ARTISAN-MADE IN ENGLAND  The "English," our finest woven coffin, is made by the Somerset Willow Company. Four generations of family weavers have been under the roof of this company, and most of the willow used is grown within a 10 mile radius of the Bridgwater workshop Somerset, England. 

The "Asian Harmony" Seagrass Coffin

UNIQUE WOVEN GRASS COFFIN - The "Asian Harmony" is handcrafted from sustainably grown seagrass cultivated in marginal fields near sea-level in Vietnam. These annual grasses are a mainstay production crop of the villagers who harvest them, grown in fields without pesticides or fertilizers. 

The grasses are tightly woven around a wooden frame, cleverly wrapped and knotted in traditional fashion, and  firmly secured with a small number of screws and staples.

The "European" - Soft White (peeled) Willow

OLD-COUNTRY STYLE  The "European" is handmade by a small weaving cooperative in Europe, produced from sustainably grown willow.  The European's  "White" willow is a golden straw color, achieved by peeling the young willow.

Willow is one of the most  renewable  basketry fibers, harvested annually from farm hedgerows. It can grow on the same plant for up to fifty years, and dense willow groves provide valuable habitat for nesting birds and other creatures.

OLD-COUNTRY STYLE  The "European" is handmade by a small weaving cooperative in Europe, produced from sustainably grown willow.  The European's  "Natural" willow is a warm honey color, inlaid with a chestnut brown band.
